NYC—Winter Storm Stella has arrived with sparkling hail and frosty
winds, so we’re sticking inside and disappearing into stacks &
stacks of our most stimulating
books. The most inspiring volume at our
side is the (de)famed
Hollywood Babylon. Penned in years of pent-up acid
from life-long Angeleno & Dark Father of Underground Cinema,
Kenneth Anger,
the volume is a delicious journey through decades of
page-turning gossip from the golden dawn of the film industry. While
much of the myths printed in the book are contestable at best, they
present a compendium of pre-TMZ entertainment apocrypha, rich in the
sinister detail we would come to expect from celebrity literature. Most
gratifying of all the book’s intricate features are the proto-pop
layouts,
no zenith or gutter of Hollywood goes without accompanying iconography.
With every turn of the page, the reader slips further and further into
dizzying excess–a much welcome effect from spreads of
full-bleed Offset imagery,
expertly registered with fine black & white gradient pigments. It’s
hard to say if we’ll come out for air, even after the snow stops. They
just don’t print them like they used to–Except they do: at
Publicide.
