Moveable woodblock type & block imaging came to life in ancient China and then filtered west– finding a home 1500 years later among Gutenberg’s pressmen. How It Works
At our Midtown Manhattan Print Shop, we’ll create a master plate of the art file, rather than exclusively relying on a sprawling archive of moveable type. Not too far from age-old techniques implemented in the Middle Ages and Ancient East, Letterpress Printing today relies on a photopolymer emulsion process. First, the layout and typeset happens digitally: after you send us your art file, the design, logo, and key contact information goes through a point by point finessing from our typesetter.
The perfected pre-press proof is then approved by the client and sent off to be created into copper inking plates; by way of acid etching and photo engraving, the text/art elements are transformed into a relief. The final result is a convex manifestation of the print to come. The raised design stands out from the rest of the plate, ready to kiss or bite into your selection of premium paper stock.
Depending on the complexity of your print, Letterpress might require multiple plates. The greatest letterpressings are carefully built with multiple processes. The inherent dimension of Letterpress can be expanded upon with an artful selection of specialty specs. Spot color, Embossing, and Foil Stamping might require your print to go through the presses more than once. Colorful imaging could demand offset printing or digital methods. Either way your print is in careful hands, receiving the same consideration whether you’re going for a shining streamlined single-process letterpress or a super-stacked spec-heavy showstopper.
